Do you love it when you are faced with impossible odds? Probably not. I’m usually not thrilled about facing something when I don’t think there a very good chance of success either. I discovered something interesting though when I read a book called, “In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day,” by Mark Batterson. God loves impossible odds! David taking out the giant Goliath with a slingshot or Gideon having his army cut back to only three hundred and then defeating the Midianites with trumpets and lamps. These are impossible odds! Yet, the reason God likes impossible odds is because that’s when He will get all the glory! Otherwise, man will have a tendency to say, “Look what I was able to do. By the way God, thanks for helping me.”
We need to realize that God is way bigger than we give him credit. He’s just waiting to do something that gives Him all the glory. It might be in your life or even in the life of the church. When God called us to start Sonlight, that was crazy! We were and still are way out of our league! Did you know that more than 80% of church plants don’t survive two years? I’ve never been a pastor of a church before. None of us knew what we were doing. That’s why God gets all the credit! He did it and is still doing it.
Even today, our church is facing impossible odds financially. It doesn’t bother me. It just means that God is up to something. I’m praying that He will do something that will show how big He truly is! I’m praying for a miracle! However, God may be doing something that we don’t even realize through this. Here’s what I know, I’m spending more time with him in prayer through this. I’m trying to discern what He is saying. I’m asking Him if he wants me to increase my giving, I’m asking him if he wants us to trim something in our budget or even if he wants us to restructure our staff team. Whatever God says, I will do. I’ve even asked God if He wants me to go bi-vocational for a period of time. I’m willing to follow His leading, even if it means me facing some impossible odds.
I do know that during this sabbatical, God has told me I haven’t even begun to be generous like I’m going to be. He’s speaking to me about trimming a lot of things out of my life so that I can be more generous in planting seeds and helping the needy. I’m not waiting until I get home either. Deena and I took a local pastor out to lunch this week and had a wonderful time hearing about God’s work in his church. I have bought books for gifts and I’m asking God to show me who to give them to. Maybe it’s you!!
I’m not perfect at this yet, because yesterday I was at the bookstore and I felt like God wanted me to buy a book that I just read called “Leading on Empty” and give it away. I looked at the price and said, “Maybe I’m not really hearing from God. I mean, I just read the book so it’s just on my mind and that’s probably why I want to buy it for someone.” Well, last night we attended church and the pastor was teaching and he said at one point, “I have been a pastor now for 22 straight years without a break. I haven’t even taken all my vacation days in a year. But I’m okay.” Right then I realized that I just missed an opportunity by God. I should have listened to God’s Holy Spirit leading me to buy that book! I decided to talk to the pastor after we broke up into groups for prayer. I told him about the book and where to find it. He said he was interested in reading it. However, if I beat him to the bookstore, he will not have to worry about buying it.
I know I didn’t even touch on this book I read, but I would classify it as a must read. It will challenge you to do something radical for God. It will help you to face those odds with confidence and see that God is up to something in your difficult circumstances.
